Fryderyk Chopin (Bovy)

Fryderyk Chopin (1810-1849)

Jean-François-Antoine Bovy, medallion, bronze, 1837, diameter 117 mm.

Collection: Muzeum Fryderyka Chopina, Warsaw [M/96].

Many objects bearing a portrait of Chopin were based on Bovy’s work, which was used in lithographs by F. Schauer and L. Denis and in a brooch cameo by Remy. Excellent casts of this medallion were made by Karol Minter of Warsaw during Chopin’s lifetime. The front of these casts were identical to Parisian models, while placed on the back, in the form of a small plaque, was the inscription ‘FABRYKA/C.MINTER/W WARSZAW]IE]/Nr 1337’. On the back of the medallion setting (held in the Muzeum Fryderyka Chopina in Warsaw), Solange Clésinger placed dried flowers from Fryderyk Chopin’s deathbed.
