Fryderyk Chopin (Mordasewicz after Kolberg)

Fryderyk Chopin (1810-1849)

Kazimierz Mordasewicz, oil on canvas, [c.1900], copy of Antoni Kolberg’s portrait from 1848, 675 x 532.

Collection: Muzeum Fryderyka Chopina, Warsaw [M/84].

On the back of the portrait is an inscription: ‘Wierna kopia portretu Chopina / wykonana przez K. Mordasewicza / Original wykonany z natury / przez Ant. Kolberga w r. 1848 w Paryżu.’ [‘Faithful copy of a portrait of Chopin / made by K. Mordasewicz / Original produced from nature / by Ant. Kolberg in 1848 in Paris.’]

According to Idzikowski and Sydow (p. 100), there existed another copy of Kolberg’s portrait. This was a pencil drawing in an oval, approx. 300 x 200. Before World War II, it was placed on sale in Warsaw by the antiquarian art dealer Franciszek Studziński.
