Fryderyk Chopin on his deathbed
Teofil Kwiatkowski, watercolour, pencil, [c.1870], 166 x 227, dated and signed in pencil: ‘F. Chopin – 17 Octobre 1849. T. Kwiatkowski, a Paris No 65 rue de Rennes’.
Collection: Muzeum Fryderyka Chopina, Warsaw [M/943].
Immediately after Chopin’s death, Kwiatkowski made three drawings from nature depicting the composer on his deathbed. They later served him as prototypes for numerous replicas. Duplicated in many copies, in various techniques, they presented the composer’s head in profile. They were always furnished with the date of Chopin’s death, signed and sometimes dedicated. They were produced in various years, mostly for the composer’s friends.
